YouTube Android app gets new UI, adds bottom navigation bar

YouTube has been testing a new user interface since 2016 and the video-streaming service finally rolled out a new UI starting Tuesday on Google Play Store.

The new redesigned YouTube app comes with a major change in the navigation bar in the app. The new design showcases a smaller top bar and a new bottom navigation bar.

The new navigation bar consists of four tabs- Home, Trending, Subscriptions and Library.  The old Account tab has been renamed to Library. The upload button which is used to upload videos from your device has moved to the top bar beside the search button. On touching your profile icon, you are directed to your Account page.

There is also a new channel list added below the top bar under the Subscriptions tab.  It shows the list of all channels you have subscribed. Under Library, you can view your YouTube history, your saved offline videos, liked videos, watch later and My videos. YouTube, earlier this month, announced that it was working on a new design for the app which would initially be available only to a small group of people to get feedback. The company wrote on its blog that the new redesigned YouTube app will be based mainly on three crucial points- simplicity, consistency and beauty.

” The site design is built on a new, faster framework named Polymer, which enables quicker feature development from here on out. And today, we are introducing one of the first new features developed on Polymer: Dark Theme. Developed to cut down on glare and let you take in the true colors of the videos you watch, Dark Theme turns your background dark throughout your entire YouTube experience. This is only the beginning you can look forward to more powerful new features coming soon,” reads the blog post.
