The Dangal scene that brought tears to Geeta Phogats eyes

Speaking exclusively to India Today, Geeta Phogat revealed how watching her life unfold on the big screen was an emotional rollercoaster for her.

A movie that broke the single day collection figures for a Hindi feature film, the second biggest opening weekend for a Bollywood blockbuster in 2016, Dangal has hit the ground running. The Aamir Khan-starrer is being hailed for its authenticity and it even left the film’s inspiration Geeta Phogat in tears. (Phogat sisters focused on Olympic medal despite Dangal success)

Speaking exclusively to India Today, Geeta Phogat revealed how watching her life unfold on the big screen was an emotional rollercoaster for her.

Geeta recalled how watching herself wrestle with her father was an intense experience and also a life lesson.

“I did not enjoy watching that scene a lot as I realised how I treated my father and that I started thinking that I am some pahalwan (heavyweight). I did not like that scene as I got emotional watching it. It is not that I wrestled only once with my father, he used to often test us in the akhara (training centre). But I loved watching the entire movie,” revealed the CWG Gold medalist.

The real star of this story in reel and real life is the father of Geeta and Babita, Mahaveer Singh Phogat. He had to juggle between being a taskmaster and a father, training Geeta & her sisters in the day while massaging their feet at night.

“Yes absolutely I had to go through that in my life. Just like a headmaster has to juggle, he has to teach the children in the school but not on the ground. In the night Geeta & Babita and the smallest one Ritu used to fight to sleep next to me and I used to pull them all close. So that has been shown absolutely correctly in the movie, in fact I have done much more than that,” said the Dronacharya awardee.

Off late sports movies have done well at the box office be it Dhoni, Sultan, Milkha Singh, Mary Kom or even Chak De India. Babita Kumari was all praise for the filmmakers of Dangal.

“We have seen the movie and it is 99% a true reflection of our lives and we loved it. I would like to thank Aamir sir and the entire team of Dangal for showing our story on the big scene,” Babita told India Today.

“They show a lot of genuine wrestling in the entire movie be it on mud or wrestling on mat. They even showcased the national championship so this is one thing that I really liked about the movie,” added Geeta

Mahaveer Singh Phogat saw the impact of Geeta’s 2010 CWG gold in Haryana. He hopes this movie will spread that message and bring a change in people’s attitudes.

“I am very happy as the whole world can watch this movie. Parents who discriminate between a male & girl child, maybe their attitudes will change now. I will tell you about our state Haryana, earlier there was no akhara (training centre) for girls but after 2010 till today there are over 50 akharas for women now. So there is a change in Haryana and maybe in other states like UP & Rajasthan attitudes will also change after watching this movie. I love my girls a lot and gave them the same respect as is given to any male child.”
