Kareena Kapoor picks Salman as her favourite Khan

Kareena Kapoor has said that Salman Khan is a sweetheart and the lifeline of Bollywood.

The 31-year-old actress, who has worked with all the leading Khans of Bollywood, including her beau Saif Ali Khan and now Imran Khan, chose the ‘Dabangg’ star, when she was asked who was her favourite among the Khans.

Kareena Kapoor did ‘Bodyguard’ with Salman in 2011, which is being considered one of the Bollywood’s biggest hits.

Even at a function held earlier, where she had to choose her favourite actor, Kapoor had picked Salman Khan.

The After Hrs review Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu

Film: Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu
Director: Shakun Batra
Cast: Imran Khan, Kareena Kapoor
Rating: ***1/2

Bollywood thrives on love stories, so you think of a dozen ‘louve’ stories and romcoms that’ve been churned out over the years and wonder how different could this be. But surprisingly it is and refreshingly so.

A ‘just-lost-his-job’ architect Rahul Kapoor (Imran) believes in living by the rulebook set by his champagne-clinking, right up on the social rung, but super-dominating parents (Ratna and Boman); while out-of-work hairstylist, Rianna Braganza’s book has only one rule — no rules please. They couldn’t have been more different, but a chance meeting between them leads to more than just a fun drunk night out.

The two end-up getting married in true-blue Vegas style, only to realise the very next morning that they want to annul it. Though not bound legally, the two do become friends and on Rianna’s insistence, Rahul agrees to take a trip to Mumbai and stays with her rather extrovert family, without telling his own parents of his arrival or the truth about his marriage and job. But that’s until he accidentally bumps into his mum.

The story follows a predictable path mostly, but not all the way and that’s where the film scores. For a first-timer, the director (Shakun Batra) has done a fine job of not going over-the-top with any character or stretching any scene. But the film is more for the multiplex audience and may not strike a chord with the masses. As for the actors, the casting couldn’t have been more perfect and that goes for the supporting actors too — Ram Kapoor, Nikhil Kapoor and the lot.

We have seen Kareena generate the same kind of sunshine charm and exuberance before (It’s Geet reincarnate of Jab We Met. Only the action is in Vegas here, not Bhatinda) but here too, she hits bull’s eye with amazing ease and this will also be one of the performances people won’t forget for long.

The real surprise though is Imran, who fits the role to the tee. Though he does falter in a few scenes post interval, it looks like the director was sharp to catch it in time so you don’t linger on those few slips at all, as he’s a scene-stealer in most others, especially in the scenes with Soniya Mehra. Boman and Ratna excel too. Music is another plus, it comes at the right time and is not overbearing. Bosco’s Auntyji is very catchy in steps and spirit, as is the title track.

Overall, it’s a fun date flick that goes well with the spirit of Valentine. Don’t look for anything, but a few good laughs and several cute moments and you won’t be disappointed!

Review Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a treat

Sukanya Verma feels that Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is neither on the epic side like Dharma Productions’ great, grand ancestors nor weighed down by an overload of pop culture references of those that define the genre.

He’s cream cheese. She’s white chocolate. What a peculiarly milky combination, I thought at first. What I didn’t realise is how these two pasty ingredients can combine to create a light, smooth-textured cheese cake.

And that is exactly how Karan Johar’s [ Images ] Valentine’s Day treat Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (EMAET), directed by debutante Shakun Batra tastes.

Rom-coms are an enduring albeit foreseeable genre, be it local, Hollywood or exotic. What sets them apart is how they play out in terms of treatment, imagination, voices, chemistry or soul.

EMAET is neither on the epic side like Dharma Productions’ great, grand ancestors nor weighed down by an overload of pop culture references of those that define the genre. Instead the confection’s appeal lies in its underplayed wit, quirky within plausibility protagonists and a refreshing disregard for conventional conclusions.

Almost like a big studio flick with an indie mindset. Almost.

Save for a passing acknowledgement to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai [ Images ], the sensibility and reference points of Batra’s brand of romance, co-written with Ayesha Devitre, are closer to the likes of (500) Days of Summer, Garden State and Annie Hall, reflecting on interrelated themes like, opposites attract, coming-of-age-aided-by-a-free spirited-girl, modern-day relationships and urban humour.

The writing doesn’t have the smarts of the afore-mentioned films or the bite of, say, Farhan Akhtar’s [ Images ] contemporary conversation but EMAET’s endearing, unassuming quality and refusal to take the run-of-the-mill route, like Dharma’s Wake Up Sid [ Images ], makes it a much better film than I expected to see. What’s more? It’s barely two hours.

So you have two doozy characters living in the exuberant city of Las Vegas [ Images ] (captured splendidly in David Mac Donald’s lovingly lit frames). Imran Khan [ Images ] plays Rahul Kapoor, a product of upscale, uptight, fussy upbringing (a subdued Boman Irani [ Images ], Ratna Pathak in an exaggerated version of her character from Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai).

Along comes Kareena Kapoor [ Images ] as Riana Braganza, the hairstylist with red highlights, representing her carefree ways and relaxed rearing by a super cool Catholic family.

The curious case of extremes doesn’t stop here. He drives a Prius. She rides a nitro scooter. He’s lackluster. She’s livewire. He got fired. She got dumped. And in a drunken stupor, the duo accidentally gets married. This is the part where any/all alleged similarities to What Happens in Vegas end.

So while Riana’s two-years older than Rahul technicality is never a topic of speculation, their camaraderie is more Lucy-Linus than Lucy-Schroeder. She pulls his ears, pinches his nose, bullies him and gets away with everything. He’s happy playing second fiddle. For all their attractive looks, together they make a platonic, U/A impression. But it seems deliberate and works.

Once in a while, you pause to ask why neither of them has a single friend? Okay so Rahul is a mollycoddled introvert but what about Riana? The girl’s practically Miss Congeniality.

The ensuing episodes gradually unfold into disarming interactions between Rahul and Riana, revealing their contrasting traits, opening avenues for amusing banter against Amit Trivedi’s self-effacing score, Vegas and its many gamble-free attractions. Considering it does little except provide fun props, glittery backdrops and a venue for the impromptu wedding, the city’s contribution is largely superficial. And so once the gimmick bag is exhausted, the story moves to Mumbai [ Images ].

Typically at this juncture, most rom-coms lose steam or turn trite but Batra allows Rahul and Riana’s story to chart its own natural progression unafraid to see where it goes. The upshot is as real as our first introduction into the warm-as-a-bun, funny-without-trying-hard Braganza household. While on fun, the frequency of its well-timed, droll moments is much appreciated. Especially: Imran’s disastrous date, his job interview at a Japanese firm or his hostile but hilarious attack with a piece of cutlery on a deserving candidate.

Imran is tailor made for this role. I read somewhere how he harbored a secret crush on Kareena for the longest time. No wonder the gleam in his eyes when he gazes into hers screams fan boy. Sweet thrills aside, his Rahul is a self-effacing underachiever and Imran’s puny physique, stiff body language and understated hesitation score adequately.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is told from his perspective but belongs to Kareena Kapoor. After doing ornamental roles in films like Bodyguard and Ra.One, it’s nice to see the spunky actress in her element again since Jab We Met [ Images ]. Though vivacious, her Riana isn’t a child-woman like Geet but a free-spirited, unflappable adult armed with plucky impulses and scrumptious smile that helps Rahul come-of-age and EMAET worth a helping.

Another first for Aamir Khan

Filmmaker and actor Aamir Khan was planning a grand theatrical launch of the first look for his forthcoming film Talaash — the teasers of which were to be out with Agneepath that releases today. However, the actor has had to shelve his plans of the big event, after fire broke out on the sets of his TV show on Monday, throwing his schedule in complete disarray.

According to a source, a big event was being planned for the first look, as the film is special for the actors and the filmmakers in more than one way. “It’s after 10 years that Aamir has reunited with Farhan (filmmaker Farhan Akhtar) and Ritesh (producer Ritesh Sidhwani) after Dil Chahta Hai. Also Aamir has teamed up with two of his favourite actresses again with whom he’s had the biggest hits in the past — Kareena Kapoor (3 Idiots) and Rani Mukerji (Ghulam), so naturally everyone was excited about it and planning a big celebration.”

What made the launch even more special is that it’s the first time in India that a digital poster is being released for a film. “There are a lot of moving images that will culminate into a still poster. It’s being done for the first time in India,” confirmed an insider. Apart from releasing it with Agneepath, the actor now plans to launch it on the social networking site Facebook that the actor is quite active on. “He is always in touch with his fans on FB, so he thought it’s the best way to connect with them through this poster,” adds the source.

Also, the source adds, Aamir thought that it’s the best way to curb the fakes doing the rounds. “Ever since the film has started, several websites have been putting up fake or self-created posters for circulation. Releasing this poster online now, would keep that in check as people can have a direct access to the originals,” the source informs.

The film directed by Reema Kagti, that’s slated for a summer release this year, is a suspense thriller that will see Aamir play a cop. Buzz also suggests that it’s a love triangle between the three leads.

Bollywood happenings in Hyderabad

What happens in Hyderabad…Does not confine itself to Hyderabad alone. 2011 saw many Bollywood biggies visit the city and their trip brought with them face-offs, link-ups and more. Here’s a round up of the various headline-creating moments for Bollywood in Hyderabad

Cover-up of the year

Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma: Are they? Aren’t they? The question that plagued Bollywood for long was finally answered in Hyderabad. Former lovers, Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma, were spotted together at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad as they had come to town to attend the wedding of a city biggie. As the shutterbugs spotted the duo, Ranveer in all his chivalry tried to protect his lady love, Anushka, who demurely chose to walk behind him. That the couple chose to part ways later is a different story altogether.

Holidayers of the year

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor: They are self-confessed lovers of London and Switzerland. In fact, Kareena claims Switzerland is “like home”. But when Bollywood’s star couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor needed to spend some quality time with one another, they chose Hyderabad, in all its princely glory. While Saif was in town shooting with Deepika Padukone for “Cocktail”, Kareena flew in to join him for a few days. The couple then moved into the palace-turned-star hotel for some R&R, putting the destination on the map for all lovers.

Hip shakers of the year

Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif: He jumped from a platform of considerable height and she dance to “Sheila Ki Jawaani”. And in between all this, the services of a chopper were used. Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif regaled a select few in Hyderabad during the engagement ceremony of Mallika and Siddharth Reddy. Yes, Bollywood stars shimmying and shaking at weddings is what we heard of in other cities, but this time, B-Town came calling for an engagement ceremony. And what a spectacle it was!

The Ooh La La Lady of the year

Vidya Balan: While the world had forgotten about Silk Smitha and her story, actor Vidya Balan was single-handedly responsible for bringing the southern siren with Telugu roots back in public memory through “The Dirty Picture”. And along with that, Silk’s long lost relatives and friends too managed to find their five minutes of fame. Be it shooting in the city for the flick or returning to promote the movie, Vidya gave it her all. From going retro to risque, Vidya sure made many turn around and say ‘Ooh La La’.

Jodi of year

Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra: Yes, it all began here, in Hyderabad. The stories that now so frequent the pages of all entertainment and gossip tabs and mags was originally a Hyderabad baby. Shah Rukh Khan’s proximity to co-star Priyanka Chopra has been documented for the past few months. But it was in Hyderabad that King Khan brought along Priyanka Chopra for the first time to perform at the GVK wedding. And ever since, the rumor mills have been churning overtime. For now, it seems like PC accompanies SRK wherever he goes!

Rockstar of the year

Ranbir Kapoor: He is one cool customer – charming, talented and a ladies man. Ranbir Kapoor sure knows how to make the ladies swoon. In the city to promote his flick “Rockstar” the Kapoor lad, not only had the ladies eating out of his hands, but also managed some ‘me’ time with director Imtiaz Ali. Taking an auto ride around the city, the actor not only soaked in the sights of Hyderabad, but also gorged on the delectable cuisine and did some late night shopping as well. And all this minus the fuss and hullabaloo that usually surrounds a B-Town star. No wonder then, Ranbir is Bollywood’s original Rockstar.

Most-awaited drama of the year

It was touted to be the biggest face-off in the history of Bollywood. The playground was Hyderabad and the players were Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. Now everyone knows that there’s no love lost between the two Khans. That Ash and Salman share a very troubled history too is old news. But all these years, the three have been careful to avoid bumping into one another in public, even by mistake. So when the three of them were scheduled to come to the city for the wedding festivities of a famous city family, the media went berserk. A face-off was guaranteed and that left most mediawallahs salivating. But trust our B-Town stars to avoid such situations with perfection. It so happened that while SRK was at the venue Ash-Abhishek and Salman were conspicuous by their absence. The moment SRK took his leave Abhi-Ash sauntered in, socialized for a while and left. Then entered the Khan of the season, Salman, with his entourage in tow. Yes, they were all at the same venue, albeit at different times. So no fireworks here folks.

Tourist of the year

Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan: If one owns an IPL team, the other is part of the CCL team. The Badshah of Bollywood and B-Towns enfant terrible were Hyderabad’s most frequent high profile B-Town visitors this year. SRK came to the city to watch his team, Kolkata Knight Riders, play in the IPL, apart from attending a high profile shaadi and shooting portions of his magnum opus, “Ra.One”.

Meanwhile, Salman too came to the city umpteen times to watch his team in the CCL, Bollywood Heroes, play cricket. That apart, film promos and weddings too kept the Khan of the season coming back to the city for more. Not forgetting however are the rocking bashes that Salman would throw in the city for his buddies. But alas, only a select few were
allowed entry!

Kareena tops sexiest Asian women list beats Katrina

In a recent survey conducted by Eastern Eye, a weekly through a social networking site like twitter says that Kareena Kapoor is the sexiest Asian woman in the world. The second position to hold is Katrina Kaif. Katrina was holding the position for the last three years but slipped this year through a narrow margin.

Eastern Eye showbiz editor Asjad Nazir said, “This battle between the two beauties is a sign of things to come in Bollywood in the next few years. Although the list contained pop stars, TV personalities, models and film stars from around the world, the voting quite comprehensively showed that Kareena and Katrina have put a distance between themselves and the rest of the contenders in terms of popularity.”
Suzanne Khan is the new entrant, she won the 16th position. Other notable stars in the list included Priyanka Chopra (3), and Bipasha Basu (4), who both slipped down one place each. Frieda Pinto came 5th, followed by Deepika Padukone (7).
