Rio Olympics: Twitterati slam Shobhaa De for her remark on Indian athletes

Shobhaa De trashed Indian athletes saying their goal in Rio was to click selfies and return empty handed, the Twitterati exploded with anger slamming the socialite author for her insensitive remark.

Her stinging comment came when the sports fans were nursing heart breaking close finishes.

“That’s a tad unfair. You should be proud of your athletes perusing human excellence against the whole world,” responded India’s only individual Olympic gold medalist, Abhinav Bindra, who missed out on a bronze medal at Rio with a whisker.

Actor Gul Panag joined Bindra in slamming Shobhaa De.

“Lots of lament about medal tally, but no lament about lack of fitness culture which builds a sporting culture,” she tweeted.

Tennis star Somdev Devvarman also found the author’s comment to be insensitive and former India hockey player Viren Resquina suggested that De should run on hockey field for 60 minutes or hold a rifle like Abhinav and Gagan (Narang). It was not the sports personalities who felt offended.

Sports fans also couldn’t take it.

“Goal of Shobhaa De on twitter. Online aao. Bina matlab ki baat karo. Gaali khao. wapas jao (Shobhaa De’s goal on twitter. Come online. Talk senseless. Get abuse and return),” said a Twitterati.

Following the backlash, Shobhaa De came up with another tweet. This time she put the blame on the officials and not the athletes. “Official apathy main reason why we fare so poorly during every Olympics, not just Rio. Difficult for athletes to ‘compete’ with this hurdle,” she tweeted.

But the twitterati were not happy by the response. They sought that Shobha De show some grace and apologise to the athletes.

Another twitter user said that all she was looking for is just five minutes of fame and that should be denied to her.
