Renowned sarangi player Ustad Sultan Khan passes away

Ustad Sultan Khan, known not just for his mesmeric playing of the sarangi but also his baritone that graced many a song, passed away in Mumbai on Sunday.The 71-year-old Padma Bhushan musician died because of kidney failure. He was also a diabetic and had been battling renal problems for some time. He would often visit hospital for dialysis.However, his health has lately been deteriorating. On Sunday, he was rushed in a critical condition from his Malad residence to a hospital where he finally succumbed.

Before his death, the music legend is learnt to have expressed his wish to be buried in Jodhpur near the graves of his parents.

Within the minutes of the passing away of Ustad Sultan Khan, the web world was abuzz with messages of grief and condolence.

His acolyte and Bollywood music composer Salim Merchant wrote on a micro-blogging site: “I lost my ustad – Ustad Sultan Khan, my guru my friend my idol. He passed away this afternoon. We will never have a sarangi maestro like him.”

Actor-filmmaker Rahul Bose tweeted: “Ustad sultan khan saab had a huge heart & an impish sense of humour. He sang well too! Listen to him on the soundtrack of ‘Mr and Mrs Iyer’.”

Singer Shaan wrote: “Shocked..really sad.. Khansaab no more…”

Ustad Sultan Khan hailed from Indore Gharana and was a proponent of Hindustani classical music. He collaborated with various artists during his musical career. He is survived by his son Sabir Khan, who is also a Sarangi player.  May Ustad Sultan Khan rest in peace!
