Feb 10, Colombo: Supporters protesting the arrest of former military chief General Sarath Fonseka clashed with the government supporters today in Colombo forcing the Police to fire tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters.
Supporters of the General including some Buddhist monks staging a protest near the court complex in Hulftsdorp came under a stone attack from a small group of people believed to be government supporters.
The opposition protestors retreated first but returned to attack the government supporters when the police stepped in and fired tear gas to control the crowd. Reports say eight people have been injured in the melee.
Reportedly police were forced to tear gas similar protests in Galle, Matara and Ampara this afternoon to disperse the protestors who pelted stones at the police.
The defeated opposition candidate General Fonseka was arrested under section 57(1) of the Army Act by the military police on Monday night for violating the military conduct by engaging in politics while in uniform and revealing state classified information. Read Full Story from Publisher
