PM gives Rs 400cr, Naidu fasts

Dec. 21: The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Tuesday announced a relief of Rs 400 crore from the National Calamity Fund as an ad hoc advance to the rain-hit farmers of Andhra Pradesh.

He cleared the fund after 28 Congress MPs from the state called on him and also promised more aid once he receives the report of the survey teams of the Centre and the state.

There is added pressure on the Centre to provide more relief to farmers in the context of the Telugu Desam leader, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, refusing to call off his hunger-strike taken out for the sake of farmers.
