OnePlus 5 is coming soon. This is something we know well. Recently OnePlus CEO Lau Pete confirmed that the company was already working on a phone that is going to be the flagship phone. Although Lau didn’t confirm the name of the device, we know it well that it is called the OnePlus 5. This is also the phone that will succeed, the OnePlus 3T and the OnePlus 3 which were the phones of the year in 2016. This year that title — the phone of the year — could belong to the OnePlus 5. Be it camera, hardware, processor or the camera, both OnePlus 3 and 3T did well and the same is expected of the OnePlus 5.
Now only time will tell how the OnePlus 5 but the expectations are surely running high. And because of these expectations there are also a lot of rumours that have started doing rounds on the web. Some of these will prove accurate. Some may not.
Logically, after announcing the OnePlus 3 and 3T last year, the company should have been working on OnePlus 4. But, that’s not what is happening. The OnePlus is skipping the OnePlus 4 and instead is expected to announce the OnePlus 5 next month. The reason for OnePlus to ditch number 4 is because it is considered an unlucky numeric back in China. Whatever be the reason, OnePlus 5 is nearing its global launch. India Today Tech expects it to happen in June.
Well ahead of the launch, OnePlus 5 (name yet to be confirmed by the company) has been subjected to several rumours and leaks on the web. Wherein one leak reveals a bigger battery inside the OnePlus 5 compared to what is there in the OnePlus 3T, the other one hints that the smartphone will be launched in two variants with 6GB and 8GB of RAM. Amidst all the speculations surfacing the web, India Today Tech earlier confirmed that the phone will have dual camera set-up for OnePlus 5.
But that is one confirmed bit. What else is there? A lot of rumours, and this is what we are hearing:
Display: On the display front, OnePlus 5 will sport a 5.5-inch display just like the previously launched OnePlus 3T. For now there is no clarity on the resolutions as of yet, however, chances are it could also be similar to that of the last year’s OnePlus 3T which features a 1080P. Also it is not yet clear if the phone will have the LED IPS display or OLED.
Processor: The flagship OnePlus 5 is almost certain to come with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor. This same chip is also used in the global variants of the recently-launched Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+. Even Xiaomi Mi 6 uses the same processor and we are hearing that the same processor will be used in the upcoming HTC U11. There is no chance that the OnePlus 5 is not coming with the same flagship processor. The Snapdragon is built using 10nm and is the most powerful processor from Qualcomm for this year.
Software: OnePlus 5 is expected to run on the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box. In China though, it will possibly use Hydrogen operating system. This is also certain because the OnePlus 3T and the OnePlus 3 already run on Android Nougat based Oxygen OS. So
Storage: OnePlus 5 is rumoured to come with two storage variants – 64GB and 128GB internal storage. This is similar to how the OnePlus 3T was launched.
Cameras: One thing that is confirmed is the coming of the dual cameras at the back for the upcoming OnePlus flagship. On the front, the phone is likely to come packed with the 16-megapixel shooter that OnePlus 3T sports. It is expected that the OnePlus will use the dual-camera setup on the rear to help users click better photos in low light as well as offer modes like Portrait and Blur that we have seen on phones like the iPhone 7 Plus. For now there are no other camera details but it is possible that one of these cameras could sport a telephoto lens, which will be similar to the lenses that are there in the Xiaomi Mi 6 and the iPhone 7 Plus.
RAM: The smartphone is expected to come with two RAM variants – 6GB and 8GB of RAM. Although the 6GB is rumoured, we should sound some caution on that because 8GB is more likely.
Battery: OnePlus 5 will come with 3400mAh battery set-up like the OnePlus 3T. But, the difference will be the upcoming smartphone will come with fast charging ability, which will charge OnePlus 5 almost 25 per cent faster than the OnePlus 3T.
Launch and shipment date: OnePlus has confirmed that it is making a flagship smartphone, but hasn’t revealed any launch dates for now. However, several media reports surfacing on the web suggest that the OnePlus 5 will be announced next month – June. A latest report suggests that the OnePlus 5 will start shipping June 2017 onwards, which means that the June launch timeframe is ‘almost’ confirmed. However, until OnePlus confirms, everything remains a rumour.
One thing about the launch that India Today Tech can confirm that it will be launched in India at the same time when the phone goes on sale globally.
Price: OnePlus 5 was recently spotted listed on OppoMart at a price tag of $449 which is roughly around Rs 28,800. However, take this price with a pinch of salt. It is extremely speculative.
