Karthik Subbaraj and his fascination to shoot in Madurai speaks of the love this filmmaker has for this city. After shooting his film with Dhanush, referred to as #D40, in London, the crew is now shooting portions of the film in Madurai. We hear that these scenes form a flashback portion in the film, and have Dhanush as a village chieftain.
A wedding song featuring Dhanush and Sanchana Natarajan was shot in Keelakuyilkudi, 12km from Madurai, on Tuesday and Wednesday. The shoot happened at the Karupana Swamy Temple at the foothills of the hillock.
Wedding banners had been put up by the art directors all around the place to resemble a wedding reception. The caption in the banners confirmed the character name of the Dhanush in the film as Suruli. Sanchana’s character is named Valli. Banner culture is a big part of the wedding celebrations in Madurai, and Karthik Subbaraj, who hails from here, has not missed it. Other than Dhanush and Sanchana, veteran actress Vadivukkarasi, and actors Soundaraja and Jigarthanda fame Ramachandran Durairaj were seen at the spot.
Choreographer Baba Bhaskar choreographed the song which depicts people taking a procession towards the bride’s house from the temple. Dhanush was seen sporting a handlebar moustache that resembled Rajini’s in Petta (which, incidentally, was also directed by Karthik Subbaraj). In fact, the set-up seemed similar to the wedding scene of Sasikumar and Malavika Mohanan’s characters in Petta, which was also shot in Madurai. The team will be shooting in and around Madurai for a week, a source told us, adding that they might next shoot in Thirumangalam, 24km from Madurai.
