CHENNAI: Amidst high drama over Elano Blumer’s injury, Chennaiyin FC went to the top of the table with a 3-1 victory over FC Pune City at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Wednesday.
Though they have equal points (13) and same goal difference (2) as Atletico de Kolkata, the hosts are on top courtesy the number of goals scored (14 as compared to Kolkata’s seven).
After Wednesday’s loss, Pune have slipped to fifth spot with 12 points. Interestingly, all the four goals in the match were scored by Chennai. After John Stiven Mendoza put the hosts ahead in the 62nd minute, Chennai conceded an own goal. However, they regained their lead in a dramatic finish by Brazilian Bruno Pelissari immediately and then finished it off with a Jeje Lalpeklua strike.
CFC’s marquee player Elano limped off early in the game due to injury. Bojan Djordjic returned to the starting line up to captain the side while Bernand Mendy also took his place in the defence. Harmanjot Khabra played in place of a rested Mikael Silvestre. The major change Pune made to the side that drew 0-0 with NorthEast United FC was bringing Juve man David Trezeguet in place of Dudu Omagbemi.
Man of the match:
John Stiven Mendoza: After Elano Blumer limped off due to an injury, it was the Colombian who led the charge for Chennai. He created a chance for himself and put the hosts ahead to change the flow of the game.
Pelissari’s goal: The hosts weren’t deterred after scoring an own goal. Instead they bounced back into the lead within 10 seconds through the Brazilian.
