Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa announced Sunday a new 600-MW thermal power plant at Ennore at a cost of Rs 3,600 crore to replace the 40-year-old 450-MW plant.
The new plant, to come up on a 90-acre area, would become operational by 2015.
The new alternative Ennore Thermal Power Station (ETPS) would replace the five units of the existing plant that cannot generate power to capacity as the equipment has become dysfunctional due to several years of operation.
TANGEDCO sources said all units at ETPS were being operated under less load due to chloride ingress owning to use of contaminated cooling water, low condenser vacuum, condenser tube failure and boiler tube punctures.
“Being an old station, outages occur in various equipment due to various reasons which have decreased power generation,” said an official.
