The details of the surgical strike on September 29 on terrorist launch pads across the LoC has been finally revealed. The Indian Army finally revealed details of the operation only while bestowing medals to those who were part of it during the 68th Republic Day.
According to the reports, the Army gave an account of the combat operations and the courage displayed by in the citations of the gallantry awards which were accessed by The Times of India. The citation revealed that although numerous army personnel might have been involved in strategising and executing the operation, but the 19 para soldiers were integral part of the surgical strike.
As per reports, the team involved one Colonel, five Majors, two Captains, one Subedar, two Naib Subedars, one Lance Naik, three Havildars and four Paratroopers belonging to the 4th and 9th battalions of the Para Regiment.
Amonsgt those who were awarded are Major Rohit Suri of 4th Para who received a Kirti Chakra, Col Harpreet Sandhu, commanding officer of 4 Para, who received the Yudh Seva Medal (YSM). Colonel Sandhu was tasked with undertaking two simultaneous strikes on terror launch pads and recieved the YSM for successfully formulating and executing the operation without any flaw. The strike team was also honoured with four Saurya Chakras and 13 Seva Medals.
Reports claim that the Army began planning the strike soon after the Uri attacks in Jammu and Kashmir which killed 17 soldiers when terrorist attacked the Uri base. The Army has been waiting for a new moon night, when the operation can be executed due to lack of the moon. Ultimately, in intervening night of September 28-29, a 8-member team headed by Major Rohit Suri was tasked to carry out strikes on the terror camps located across the LoC.
The team was then ordered to engage the terrorists in the open and it was then that Suri and his team came within 50 m of the target and killed two terrorists. Soon they noticed more movement in the nearby jungle and Suri reportedly disregarding his safety engaged with the terrorist in close combat and neutralised both of them.
Similarly, TOI claims that another Major was tasked to undertake surveillance of the terrorist launchpads on September 27. The Major and his team reportedly crossed the LoC 48 hours before the strike and kept the terrorists under vigil. While they strategised all possible methods to fire and the officer destroyed a weapon shelter of the enemies, which also killed two terrorists. But soon from another weapons shelter, heavy firing began. The Major reportedly crawled near the shelter and eliminated another terrorist.
Similarly another Major ambushed a shelter where terrorists were asleep and killed all of them.
The fourth Major was awarded for destroying an automatic weapon with grenades and also killing two terrorists at close range. As per reports, in one instance, the terrorist were about to use RPGs and he killed two more.
Apart from officers, even the JCOs and paratroopers showed extraordinary courage in the operation. While there was no casualty, but a paratrooper was injured during the mission.
