New Delhi: As Delhi is headed for polls again, the most important issue that can affect this electorate is of women security. After the Uber and Nirbhaya incident, the top demand of Delhiites is to make the the city safer for women. As crime against women are on the rise as compared to last year, sensing the mood the political parties have made women’s security a big political issue but this time people are demanding concerete steps from the political and administrative class to improve women’s safety.
Delhi, the national capital, has earned the dubious distinction of being India’s rape capital after the Nirbhaya and Uber incident.
Crime against women has risen considerably from last year. In 2013, about 1600 rape cases were registered, whereas in 2014 over 2000 cases were registered.
Molestation cases also shot up from three and a half thousand to over four thousand. There were less than a 1000 eve teasing cases registered in 2013- that number crossed 1200 in 2014. There was also a marginal rise in the number of dowry deaths.
Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi said, “We are giving defense training to women, have increased women constables.”
With an eye on elections, political parties have made women’s security a major issue. The Aam Aadmi Party is promising guards on every bus. The Home Minister recently launched a mobile safety app for women.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, “All the states has been asked to maintain composition of 33 per cent in state police.”
Most people, though, take these promises with a pinch of salt.
“Last year also they made promises but we are still unsafe,” a Delhi resident said.
From women commandos to increasing the number of female constables every elections politicians make tall promises but with crime against women increasing every year, the top demand of Delhiites is to make the city safer for women.
