Ek main aur ek tu with Ritesh and Genelia

Q: You’ve been so guarded about your personal life. How did you all manage that?
A: Riteish:
We just lied (laughs). Throughout our relationship we always thought that we would keep things private because everything in the industry was all open out there. We didn’t come from a film background so we didn’t know how to handle all the media attention. And we kept it that way. Whenever people asked, we said we are just friends.

Genelia: But there’s still a certain line that we draw. There are things we don’t talk about. Like we were just talking, we had a great time with the media at our wedding. There was some respect. I got a shock when we came out to give photo ops for the reception, people were cheering for us. Yes, there was something happy about it. Something positive.

Q: Genelia, how were you like growing up — really bubbly or wild-n-whacky?
G: I started working at the age of 15. And honestly, this (films) is the place where I get to be more college than when I was in one really. I used to run back to give my exams. So films make me live the part of college that I really missed out. Though in school I was like all over, very active, really bubbly. College was working and managing.

R: I was dating a girl who was in college.

Q: You’ve been dating since then! So what, are you each other’s first love?
G: Yes!
R: Almost (laughing sheepishly). See, we’ve been seeing each other for 10 years. Probably we were different in many ways, but similar in more ways than different. And in last 10 years, we’ve just grown together to be similar people in terms of thinking. If I’m doing something, I know what her reaction will be. It’s good to be in a space like that. That is also the strength in the relationship.

Q: What are your star signs?
G:
I’m a Leo, he’s a Sagittarius. Why?

Q: Very compatible! Most actors say they don’t want to marry another actor. How difficult was it marrying one?
R: It’s just 15 days. Been very easy.
G: It was easy dating one!

Q: Most couples want to take a break after wedding, but you guys are all over the place…
G: We didn’t have a choice.
R: Yes, I’d love to have a break right now, to chill out. But right now we are promoting the film and we are together. If probably she was the only one, or I was the only one promoting it, it would have affected us because I’d be left alone or vice versa. The fact that we are spending time together while we are travelling helps… we do understand the commitment that goes to the film.
G:
Also, Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya is a film that’s taken us eight years to sign together. So it is special.
R: True. We were offered quite a few films together but they were like multi-starrers, or not much screen space. We thought why dilute the beauty of our first film together? And if this one wouldn’t have happened, we wouldn’t have worked together.

Q: How did you handle link ups before marriage?
G:
See, it was very frivolous. And it died eventually. There was nothing that grew on because they were just rumours. You’re talking to your co-star and the person present there will create a story. Two people in the film industry are not treated with the same equation that you’d have in an office.
R: Most important for us was to understand each other. And once you do, everything else doesn’t matter. For example, there were so many articles written about my sexuality. And I have been asked about it in interviews too, but what can you do? And it was like, ‘Oh you’re not seeing anyone — which I obviously was lying about — so you’re gay (laughs). At first it used to bother me. The first time I was asked this was by a girl who had come to interview me for a magazine. I was in a state of shock. Okay, ‘Are you gay?’ she asked me. And I was like… what do I say? So I say no I am not. So the headline of the article was, ‘No, I’m not gay.’ And next time I go out, I was hounded that ‘Magazine mein humne aisa padha hai… aapko kya kehna hai.’ So, you know, it took me like a year to get over it. Then, me, Sajid (Khan) and other friends, we just joked about it and decided to not bother.

Q: (To Genelia) How did you take that?
G:
(Laughs) I was very cool about all this. I think it’s very silly. Like I know him, I know he’s not gay!
R: She was like… should I give a statement saying you are not gay… (laughs)

Q: Do you have to be extra careful because of your political background?
R:
I try to take care of whatever I say. I am on Twitter now. Because eventually, if you come from a political background it certainly comes back to you, and because I’m an actor, what I say will be highlighted more. So my tweets are very general, the only comment I made about elections was with regard to my brother, who won the Zilla Parishad elections. And that was the only Zilla Parishad with the highest number of voters for Congress. Otherwise I never tweet anything political.

Ekk Deewana Tha

After a month of heavy-duty action [PLAYERS, AGNEEPATH], the spotlight is on romance [EK MAIN AUR EKK TU, EKK DEEWANA THA] in the month of St. Valentine. Besides, films like READY, BODYGUARD and SINGHAM have revitalized the trend of South remakes. Gautham Menon returns to the Bollywood centre stage after a gap [REHNAA HAI TERRE DIL MEIN] with a remake of his films, made in Tamil first and Telugu later.

Both, the Tamil version [VINNAITHAANDI VARUVAAYAA] and also its Telugu adaptation [YE MAAYA CHESAVE] were considered path-breaking motion pictures. Though essentially a remake, EKK DEEWANA THA conjures memories of K. Balachander’s roaring hit EK DUUJE KE LIYE. Menon is a master storyteller, no two opinions on that, but EKK DEEWANA THA fails to leave an impact for a valid reason: A beaten to death plot tends to stagnate after a point. Also, Menon overstays the hospitality by dragging the film in its second hour. Just when you think the story would conclude, Menon does a time travel and starts a new chapter in this never-ending love story. That, honestly, only makes this snail-paced movie a taxing and cumbersome experience.

Sachin [Prateik] is an engineering graduate from a middle class family in Mumbai, who is in love with the world of cinema. One day, he sees Jessie [Amy Jackson] and it is love at first sight for him. Jessie is beautiful, elegant, smart and classy. But Jessie belongs to an orthodox Malayali Christian family where watching movies or falling in love are completely taboo.

Sachin finds himself increasingly drawn to her. Jessie, on her part, tries to forge a friendship between them, believing that cloaking their feelings under the umbrella of friendship would save them heartache, tears and a full-blown family drama. But these two different characters go through the pangs and pleasure of first love, while battling with the situations that life has placed them in.

Opting for a tried and tested story is not sacrilegious, but the challenge lies in giving a new spin to the age-old tale, which, regrettably, EKK DEEWANA THA doesn’t. Like all love stories, EKK DEEWANA THA doesn’t lack drama and emotions, but barring a few episodes, the viewer doesn’t get absorbed into the world of Sachin and Jessie, which is the chief inadequacy of the film and which, concurrently, reflects on the sketchy written material.

What baffles the viewer is the character of Jessie. While the guy is crazily in love with her, the girl, in contrast, seems downright confused about her feelings for the guy. She appears indecisive about what she really yearns for and this aspect, to put it bluntly, sends out puzzling signals not only to the lover boy, but to the by-now-exasperated viewer as well.

The screenplay totters and flounders the moment Jessie decides to part ways. The justification offered is least persuasive. Since the reason for separation is not forceful enough, it leaves the viewer feeling unsympathetic, detached and disconnected from the goings-on subsequently. The sequence at the Taj Mahal and the portions thereafter don’t work either.

Menon does handle certain dramatic and emotional moments with aplomb, but the written material lets him down. Barring a few moments that stand out, the twists and turns in the plot are repetitive and devoid of exhilaration. Also, the film is agonizingly prolonged and should’ve been spruced up by judiciously trimming at least 20-25 minutes. Rahman’s musical score has the unambiguous stamp of a genius. The best track is of course ‘Hosanna’. But the film could’ve done without a song or two in the latter half. The film boasts of some stunning visuals and the credit for it goes to DoP M.S. Prabhu, who captures the scenic beauty of Kerala with dexterity. Manu Rishi’s dialogue are real at times, but tend to get flowery at places.

Prateik is natural to the core. In fact, after DHOBI GHAT, wherein Prateik’s efforts were appreciated, now EKK DEEWANA THA makes you wake up to the potential the talented youngster possesses. It requires tremendous self-assurance and acting prowess to enact this intricate and demanding character in an authoritative style. His dialogue delivery is near-perfect and body language, precise.

Amy Jackson is charming. She carries off her part — and also the Indian attire — splendidly. Though the character is not very compelling — since she appears confused about her emotions for the madly-in-love Prateik — it must be said that you don’t detect slip-ups in her presentation of the character. In fact, it isn’t a straight-forward role for a tenderfoot, but Amy handles it like a pro. However, her makeup is inconsistent. Manu Rishi excels and so does Sachin Khedekar. Babu Antony [as Jessie's father] does a fine job. Ashwin Kakumanu and Samantha get no scope. Ramesh Sippy is likeable in a cameo.

On the whole, EKK DEEWANA THA has a few sparkling moments, that’s about it. However, it lacks the fizz for the spectator to go deewana!

Salman Khan recommends Aamir Khan

Apparently Sallu has asked ‘Bodyguard’ director Siddique to cast Aamir in his next Bollywood film

If there’s one-upmanship in the industry, there are also incidents when an actor is known to favour or promote close friends and select contemporaries. Buzz is that Salman Khan is keen that Siddique (director of Bodyguard) cast Aamir Khan in his next Hindi film after his hugely successful Bollywood debut.

A well-placed source in the industry tells us that after Bodyguard became a big hit last year, South-based director Siddique was keen to make another movie with the actor. Also, he got veteran producer Shyam Bajaj, who produced Bandhan with Salman to back it.

“But after hearing the idea, Salman felt that it was more suited for Aamir. Besides, he also conceded that he’s currently tied up with prior commitments like Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2.

So even if he wished to, he can’t commit to it. He’s even believed to have said that he would talk to Aamir if Siddique wanted him to,” recalls our source.
When contacted, Siddique maintained that he’s still working on his next script. “Only after I complete the writing part can I figure out which actors can be considered for the cast. So it’s too early to talk about the casting,” he said.

About the film…
Speaking about the kind of film he was going to make next, the director says, “It’s an action-romance with some humour and also a thriller element. That’s all I can say at this point.”

Shah Rukh Khan is West Bengal’s brand ambassador

Kolkata: Gujarat may have the Big B, but Bengal has King Khan. Not to be outdone by Narendra Modi in roping in tourists, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has enlisted the help of Shah Rukh Khan by making him the state’s brand ambassador.

State Tourism Minister Rachpal Singh said, “We know Amitabh Bachchan as the Gujarat’s brand ambassador but now we have Shah Rukh. He has great acceptability. We can tap into foreign market.”

Bengal is a state that boasts both mountains and the sea. Yet tourism had lagged for decades under the Left rule. Shah Rukh, who already owns the Kolkata Knight Rider’s franchise, has a special place in the Bengali heart.

But as is typical in Bengal, there are voices of criticism too.

Bengal has had a long lull in tourism. Now with Brand Shah Rukh propping up Brand Bengal, the government certainly hopes to break that jinx and revive an economy that has been on life support for too long.
