Can Nokia 9 beat Xiaomi Mi 6, OnePlus 5, Samsung Galaxy S8?

Nokia 9 is expected to be released in June and bound to compete with flagships like Xiaomi Mi 6, OnePlus 5 and Galaxy S8.

HMD Global’s flagship the Nokia 9 has caught all the attention for more reasons than one. The once popular mobile phone maker Nokia has not only returned to the market with a bang but also is set to compete with the best in the industry. It could well turn out to be a flagship killer if its speculated features and pricing turn true.

The Finnish company is tight-lipped on the release date of the Nokia 9 but reports have claimed that it will see the light of day either in late July or early August and priced at €749 in Europe, $699 in the United States and Rs 44,999 in India.

So much has been leaked about the Nokia 9 over the last few weeks though not confirmed. It is expected to feature a new bezel-less design, dual cameras at the back, IP68 water-and-dust resistant certification, fingerprint scanner, iris scanner and an OZO audio.

The next-generation device is expected to sport a 5.5-inch QHD OLED display with a 1,440×2,560 resolution, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, and run Android 7.1.2 Nougat operating system. It is also reportedly featuring a 6GB RAM, a 64GB/128GB internal memory (with microSD card slot), a 22MP PDAF camera with Zeiss optics, a 12MP front-snapper, and a 3,800mAh battery with Quick Charge 4.0 support.

Looking at the specifications, it is obvious that it will compete with some of the latest flagships like the Xiaomi Mi 6 and Samsung Galaxy S8, and yet-to-be-released OnePlus

For the uninitiated, the Xiaomi Mi 6 has already being released and available in two variants – the 6GB RAM+64GB ROM model priced at 2,499 Yuan (around Rs 25,000 / $363), and the 6GB RAM+128GB ROM model priced at 2,899 Yuan (around Rs 29,000 / $421). It features a 5.15-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1,080×1,920 pixels (428 ppi pixel density), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, and an Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system.

The device also has dual 12 MP main cameras – one with f/1.8 aperture, 27mm lens, OIS 4-axis, and the other with 52mm lens and f/2.6 aperture –, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash, 1/2.9″ sensor size, 1.25 µm @ 27mm and 1.0 µm @ 52mm pixel size, an 8MP front-snapper, and a 3,350mAh battery with Fast battery charging (Quick Charge 3.0).

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is priced at Rs 57,900 / $720, and sports a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1,440×2,960 pixels (570 ppi pixel density). Under the hood, it has an Exynos 8895 processor / Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (for US model), an Android 7.0 Nougat operating system, a 4GB RAM and a 64GB internal memory expandable up to 256GB via microSD card.

The handset also features a 12MP main camera with f/1.7 aperture, 26mm lens, phase detection autofocus, OIS, LED flash, 1/2.5″ sensor size and 1.4 µm pixel size, an 8MP front-snapper with f/1.7 aperture and autofocus, and a 3,000mAh battery with fast battery charging technology.

However, the OnePlus 5 is yet to be released. It is expected to be launched next month with a 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED display with 2,560×1,440 pixels, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, an Android Nougat operating system, a 6GB RAM, and a 3,600mAh battery.
