Blind soldier can see with his tongue using the BrainPort system

Craig Lundberg lost his sight in a rocket-propelled grenade attack three years ago in Iraq. He is the first British soldier to test the revolutionary new device called the BrainPort system.
The Brain-Port system is based on technology invented at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It is being developed by Wicab Inc., based in Middleton, Wis.
The device is a non-surgical visual prosthetic. Lundberg wears a pair of glasses that are fitted with a digital video camera. A device that consists of a high-tech “lollipop” rests on his tongue. Images from the video camera are then translated into gentle electrical simulation that’s read by the “lollipop” on his tongue. What this means is the image can be felt on his tongue.
