Awareness programme to be held at traffic signals

CHENNAI: At a time when Tamil Nadu continues to record the maximum accidents in the country, two non-profit organizations — Thozhan and V R Volunteers — plan to conduct a traffic awareness campaign at 100 traffic junctions in the city on a single day.The campaign will be held on August 10 at different traffic signals from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. Recent NCRB statistics show that Tamil Nadu has recorded the maximum deaths in the country in road accidents with 16,175 deaths in 67,757 accidents.

The campaign aims to create awareness to wear helmets and seatbelts and also to ensure safe road crossing by insisting that pedestrians follow rules. “We will also create awareness on importance of following the traffic signal. It will also focus on drunken driving and highlight the risks associated with it,” said a volunteer.

The campaign will also have short street plays on road safety and volunteers will distribute pamphlets with details on road safety and its importance. Those interested can visit for more details.
