Congress to raise Betma issue in state assembly

INDORE: The opposition Congress is all set to corner Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh and raise the Betma gang rapein which 18 people, including politicians’ kin, allegedly raped two schoolgirls and made their MMS clip.

“There is a virtual collapse of law and order in the state. Our legislators will take up the Betma gang rape and MMS scandal on the first day of the budget session”, leader of the opposition Ajay Singh told TOI.

On February 10 two schoolgirls were gang raped by 18 persons in Betma village, about 50 kilometers from here. The shocking incident had laid bare the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Local BJP corporator’s son, Vikas Bharati, and Dilip Kushwaha, grandson of a former Congress corporator were among the 18 accused.

Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a compensation of Rs two lakh each to the two victims.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament from Indore Sumitra Mahajan met the IG (Indore range) Anuradha Shankar and the SSP A Sai Manohar to discuss the progress in the inquiry of Betma case and demanded action against all the accused irrespective of their political clout and affiliations.” The issue is sensitive should be kept free of politics,” she said.

However, Mahajan claimed that the law and order situation in Madhya Pradesh is much better than in other states of the country. “I just returned from Pune, where the situation is worse,” she claimed and advised the leader of opposition to visit states like Maharashtra and then compare the law and order situation with MP.

Same profession and a happy marriage?

We have travelled almost three decades since then. Interestingly, the subject that the film dealt with in 1973 somewhere continues to linger as a reality among couples of 2012 too. Apart from being a sacred institution, marriage can also turn into a battlefield for couples to play out and resolve their personal differences and conflicts. However, when there is a commonality in the chosen profession of the partners, this battleground can take on a different meaning.

While some of us may continue to abide by the old adage “opposites attract”, there are couples whose marriages exemplify why similarities too can strike a chord and not be always repelling. Erratic shift timings, work pressure, stress-levels and debatable salary figures are some of the salient features of every professional life. Job market in itself is a maze where people race against each other to reach a desired destination. To find your partner as one of the participants in the same race turns the maze into a game of snake-ladder. American writer and journalist, Lionel Shriver in her book Double Fault (2006) discusses the marriage of two professional tennis players that ends on a bitter note after an injury affecting the rankings of the woman player while the husband continues to scale high in his career graph. Insurmountable jealousy and competitiveness cost the couple one thing: their ‘happy’ marriage.

For TV actor Debina Bonnerjee, who became a known face after her stint as ‘Sita’ in the mythological serial ‘Ramayan,’ her marriage to TV actor Gurmeet Chaudhary did not invite any scope for career rivalry or resentment. “The truth is we discovered a critic and a well-wisher in each other. It has happened that we have expressed our creative differences and analysed each other’s scene shots but we have done that as an exercise for our own growth and development.” Respect for each other’s work and mutual understanding between partners can save the horrors of fights over who-is-better leading to an unnecessary friction in the relationship. But what if the concern is not rivalry or competition but one of maintaining discretion and secrecy? Dr. Gitanjali Kumar, psychologist and family therapist explains, “When spouses share the same profession there is a risk factor. I remember a case where a couple, both of them in the electronic media had difficulty observing secrecy about their respective channels they were working for. Lines between personal and professional space blur bringing trouble for the couple,” she adds.

Marriage is not a game of players where one wins and the other sulks on the losing side. It is a relationship of equals, a relationship that grows and nurtures only when there is trust, faith and affection for each other. Vikrant Sud, a pediatrician by profession and soon to tie the knot with his long-time physician girlfriend explains why an alliance of medicine practitioners works best. “Explanation or clarification on things like extended shifts, a call at 1 in the night would not be needed when I know my partner is on the same career ship as I am and would understand me regardless. Conversation on medical cases would not have been possible had I decided to marry a girl of other profession,” he adds.

Every marriage survives the inevitable highs and lows of life but the important thing is to face the challenges together as a team. Dr. Kamal Khurana, relationship expert and marriage counsellor sums it well, “A marriage can never fail till the spirit of togetherness prevents the trigger to go off.”

Same profession or different, a marriage should end with the favourite cliche “…happily ever after!”

RBI allows non-banks to set up ATMs, lays draft guidelines

Moneycontrol Bureau

In a bid to expand the reach of banking services, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed non-bank entities to open White-Label ATMs (WLA) across India in-line with developed countries. The regulator has also laid down draft guidelines to set up and operate those ATMs. Side by side, this move will ensure fast-paced growth of the automated teller machines with involvement of corporates.

“RBI has reviewed the extant policy on ATMs and it has been decided to permit non-banks to set up, own and operate ATMs to accelerate growth and penetration of ATMs in the country. Such ATMs will be in the nature of White-Label ATMs and would provide ATM services to customers of all banks,” the RBI said in a release.

“This move is aimed at benefiting customers who will have greater access to banking services,” an executive director from a public sector bank told Moneycontrol.com on condition of anonymity. “At the same time, banks will earn fee income from the WLA operators. However, banks will not stop expanding their own ATM networks in a cost-effective manner,” he said.

So far, ATMs have been growing at 30% year-on-year since 2008.  Currently, there are approximately 87,000 ATMs in the country. This is considered to be less in comparison with other countries. Smaller cities and towns (read unbanked/under-banked areas) have not seen much growth in the ATM space.

What is a WLA?

Unlike regular ATMs, WLAs are not directly owned by individual banks. Any non-bank entity, be it a large corporate group (eg. Tata or Reliance) or any individual company can apply to the RBI to open those ATMs. However, companies will not have direct access to core-banking operations. Customers need to pay a fee for withdrawing/depositing money from such ATMs. It will be displayed in the ATM screen.

According to the draft guidelines, a WLA operator has to choose a “sponsor bank” who will serve as the settlement bank for all service transactions at those ATMs. This means, the WLA operator has to open a settlement account with the sponsor bank and also, it will fund the account. The sponsor bank has to be a member of one of the ATM-sharing networks (read consortiums). Currently, there are two such consortiums: National Payment Corporation of India and Cash Tree led by Bank of India.

The RBI mandates that the applying WLA operator must have a minimum net worth of Rs 100 crore. According to industry experts, telecom and retail companies are more likely to apply for setting up WLAs.

“Only cards issued by banks would be permitted to be used at the WLAs to start with. Acceptance of deposits at the WLA site into the account of the WLA operator or in any other account indicated by it shall not be permitted,” RBI said.

A WLA operator would also be allowed to earn extra revenue through advertisement placed on such ATMs.

The primary responsibility to redress any customer complaint relating to failed ATM transaction will rest with the issuing bank with necessary support to be given by the sponsor bank.

Angry Birds now invade Facebook

Seattle: Those having a Facebook account can play the world famous Angry Birds game on the social networking site.

The game has been downloaded about 500 million times and has just been launched as a free version on the site.

In the game, players use catapults to fire infuriated birds at pigs hiding inside buildings made of planks.

The Facebook game, however, allows users to pay for extra birds and other in-game extras.

According to reports, the website game is similar to the iPhone app. The only difference is players have to use a mouse to sling birds across the game’s landscapes rather than a finger.

Peter Vesterbacka, chief marketing officer of game-making company Rovio, said he hoped up to 40 percent of Facebook users would pay for in-game extras.

Rovio has never spent any money on advertising or marketing Angry Birds, the report said.

It had made 50 failed games before Angry Birds. The company also sells a million Angry Birds toys and a same number of T-shirts every month.

Gambhir run out cost us match, Dhoni

ADELAIDE: Skipper MS Dhoni, accepted his mistake of sending back Gautam Gambhir which resulted in the latter’s run out. “That was a turning point. I gave him a wrong call and from that point it was impossible for him to go back. It cost us dearly,” Dhoni said after the thrilling tie.

Talking about the last-ball hit which fetched him three runs to share the spoils with Sri Lanka, Dhoni said he played with a blank mind.

Simons replaced by Dawes

The BCCI replaced bowling coach Eric Simons with former Queensland fast bowler Joe Dawes. Dhoni praised Simons for being someone who understood “each and every bowler”.

“Eric understands each and every bowler. He knows what they speak and what they mean. They may sometimes say something and mean something. You can only understand if the bowling coach has spent some time (with bowlers). Hopefully, the new bowling coach will also do a good job,” Dhoni said.

Now, Indian Railways is on Facebook

Expanding its online reach, Railways’ Delhi Division has come up with a dedicated page on social networking site Facebook where passengers can check out availability of berths, train timings and other related information. “We have opened a page on Facebook to inform passengers about the status of vacant berths as well as the arrival and departure of trains. The page is linked with the National Train Inquiry Service and constantly updated,” said a senior Delhi Division official.

Besides the status of berths and train timings, the page will also provide detailed information about arrivals and departures at the exact platform number at New Delhi, Nizamuddin and Old Delhi stations.

Aiming at preventing misuse of available seats by “unscrupulous elements”, Railways has asked other zones to resort to such innovative measures and give adequate publicity regarding the facility of booking vacant accommodation available on trains at current ticket counters.

“Our aim is to create further awareness among passengers about this facility as due to lack of adequate awareness, it is being misused by unscrupulous elements for providing confirmed accommodation to passengers at a premium by using the current counter facility, said the official.

Railways has advised passengers travelling on short notice to use the facility of current reservation counters situated at the train originating main stations.

“The vacant reserved seats available on train after preparation of reservation charts can be booked at the current ticket counters of the train originating stations before departure of trains,” the official said.

According to Railway rules, a reserved ticket can be booked across the Passenger Reservation System counters all over the country as well as through the Internet only upto the time of preparation of reservation charts.

After preparation of reservation charts, the berths available, if any, can be booked at the current counter available at major stations.

The reservation charts are normally prepared three to four hours before the schedule departure of the train. In case of trains leaving early morning, the charts are prepared on the previous night.
