Satyam aims to be among top 3
May 19th
Three years after taking over reigns of the then scam hit Satyam Computers, management of the now Mahindra Satyam sees the company snapping out of the past, and is on path to becoming among the top three players, at least in few chosen verticals.
But marching to the goal post may not be easy for the company, given the signs of strain IT Services sector is facing in the US and Europe, cite top officials. “I do believe we are now fully recovered, but then now we have no alibi and cannot take the excuse of 2009 anymore. Given by any standards these are good results,” said Vineet Nayyar, chairman, Mahindra Satyam.
The IT Services firm posted a net profit of Rs 534.21 crore and a total income of Rs 1665.84 crore for the fourth quarter of FY12. This is against the Rs 308.43 crore of net profit and Rs 1718. 08 crore of total income, in the third quarter of this year. However, in the Q4 of last financial year it had reported losses of Rs 326 crore.
For the complete financial year, the scam hit company saw a net profit of Rs 1306.06 crore compared with a net loss of 147.23 crore in the previous financial year. The turnover was at Rs 6395.56 crore for FY12 as against Rs 5145.06 crore for FY11.
“With the US showing signs of strain and a large number of controversies in Europe may have an impact on the business. So instead of traditional software we are now getting into operations too,” Nayyar said.

Anonymous hacks govt sites for blocking vimeo
May 18th
Hacker group Anonymous, has struck again and this time its much closer home. The group reportedly brought down the Congress website, the Supreme Court website and some other government websites in retaliation for India’s new Internet laws and the blocking of websites like The Pirate Bay and Vimeo.
According to PCWorld , the group posted about the attack on their Twitter feed saying, “Namaste #India, your time has come to trash the current government and install a new one. Good luck.”
According to their Twitter feed, the group targeted websites of the Indian Supreme Court, the All India Congress Committee, Copyrightlabs.in, Department of Telecommunications, the Ministry of Information Technology, and the Jammu & Kashmir Police.
The Congress denied that its website had been hacked. “The site is not hacked at all. It was not opening for sometime because the load on the particular server was too heavy due to huge number of hits after the news of website hacking spread. It went slow at that time due to over-traffic,” Chairman of AICC’c Computer Department Vishwajeet Singh, a former Rajya Sabha MP told PTI.
Yesterday the Rajya Sabha had also debated the issue of Internet censorship with regard to the new IT rules. A number of members opposed the proposed law, which forced Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal to say the government would strive to build a consensus on the subject.
According to Medianama, Vimeo, The Pirate Bay, have been blocked because of a John Doe order taken by Copyright Labs, Chennai, from the Madras High Court, for preventing piracy of Tamil Films Dammu and 3.
Some people can still access Vimeo and The Pirate Bay. It seems that the sites were initially blocked by Reliance, followed by Airtel. The users who faced the blocking got a message saying that this was due to a DOT regulation, but later the message said that it was because of a court order.
This is not the first time that the India has faced Internet censorship. Previously when Singham was released,Reliance Communicationshad also used a John Doe order to block all video-streaming sites to curb piracy.
The government has expressed an unhealthy enthusiasm to curb social media and video websites, which they claim are being used to defame members of the government. Advocates of Internet freedom, however say that the defamatory content ruse is a mere excuse to curb any criticism of the government.

India set to overtake US as Facebook’s largest market
May 17th
India is set to overtake the US as the world`s largest Facebook market by number of users as early as 2015, according to social media analysts, driven by growing internet penetration and high rates of growth in mobile connections.
“India could overtake the United States in the next three years. Last year, Facebook users in India doubled. Growth will be driven by mobile internet users in second- and third-tier cities,” Shalini Verma, Principal Research Analyst at Gartner told CNBC, noting that the US market is saturated in terms of user numbers.
As Facebook`s third largest market, India is home to over 45 million users, behind Brazil and the United States with 47 and 157 million users, respectively, according to the latest data from Facebook`s advertising platform.
With approximately 120 million internet users, India`s internet population is forecast to grow threefold to almost 400 million users by the end of 2015 to mid-2016, according to Suhale Kapoor, Executive Vice President at analytics and market research company AbsolutData. Kapoor says by that time, India will have surpassed the US in terms of Facebook users.
With smartphone prices declining and data rates among the cheapest in the world, Kapoor believes the mobile platform will drive the growth in Facebook`s penetration in India.
Kapoor says smartphones in India cost as little as Rs 5,000 (USD 92) as prices have been falling steadily over the last 3-4 years, making it more affordable for middle class consumers. “There are daily data plans priced at Rs 10-20 (18-37 cents), this will be another driver of (Facebook) adoption, especially among students.”
Kapoor adds that India`s young demographic base means that there will also be an increasing number of Indian teenagers reaching “social media age”, or the minimum age required for signing up on social networks. In order to be eligible to sign up for Facebook, for example, a user must be 13 years of age.
Even though just 11% or 125 million Indians speak English, according to the most recent census data, Kapoor and Verma say language won`t be a hurdle for the company`s expansion.
“People in India write in a mix of both English and Hindi,” Verma said. Many Indians also write Hindi words using the roman script, rather than the traditional Devanagari script.
But Facebook is also trying to catch those who would like to use their local language to communicate. Last month, it announced the launch of the “Facebook for Every Phone” mobile application in seven local Indian languages – Gujarati, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Punjabi, Bengali and Marathi, in addition to Hindi, which became available last year.
Not a Big Revenue Market
But for investors hoping to bet on this big growth in users, Prashant Agrawal, a principal in Boston Consulting Group in Mumbai says India won`t be able to match the US in terms of revenue, given the country`s much smaller advertising market.
Annual advertising spending in India is just USD 255 million, compared with around USD 158.9 billion for the US.
Kunal Sangoi analyst at Edelweiss Securities also points out that Internet advertising makes up just 3% of India`s ad market, compared to 17% in the US.
“Our discussions with industry players suggest Facebook earned revenues of USD 5-10 million from India in the fiscal year ending in March 31, 2011,” Sangoi said.
In some ways, India epitomizes the challenge facing Facebook across Asia, says Thomas Crampton, Asia-Pacific director of Social@Ogilvy, a unit of Ogilvy and Mather.
Facebook`s average revenue per person in Asia is just USD 1.79, compared to USD 9.51 in North America, says Crampton. “The future for Facebook is finding a way to monetize all these people in terms of their revenue base.”
Schoolbags turning into curse for kids
May 16th
Outsized school bags are turning into a curse for kids, 80% of whom carry loads up to a fifth of their body weight, really taxing their backs, says a new research from the charity BackCare.
Studies show that carrying more than a tenth of your body weight can cause spinal damage.
Experts say we’re facing an epidemic of back problems in young adults when the long-term effects of this damage starts to appear.
“We are seeing increasing numbers of young adults coming for treatment in relation to back trouble and this can often be traced back to carrying heavy bags to school,” warns Peter Skew, an Essex-based expert in musculoskeletal medicine, the Daily Mail reports.
Skew, vice-president of BackCare, adds: “Children’s skeletons are still developing, and having a heavy bag slung over one shoulder can exert unnatural force on the spine…”
“Rather like exercising only one side of your body in the gym, you quickly get unilateral muscle-loading, which can cause the small muscles in the back to tighten and compress the spine,” adds Skew.
A 2007 British study showed that 13% to 50% of 11-17 year olds have experienced back pain.
KKR vs CSK: Chennai Super Kings beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 5 wickets
May 15th
KOLKATA: Dwayne Bravo smashed a last-ball six as Chennai Super Kings pulled off a stunning five-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders in a dramatic Indian Premier League match to keep their hopes of a play-off berth alive on Monday.
Scorecard | Watch IPL Highlights | Match in Pics
With five runs required from the last ball, Bravo (11 not out off seven balls) smashed Rajat Bhatia for a six over long on to stun a jam-packed crowd at Eden Gardens.
Chasing 159 for a win, Michael Hussey (56 from 39 balls) and Murali Vijay (36 from 25 balls) set the platform with a 97-run stand from 10.2 overs for the opening wicket.
But Sunil Narine’s mystery bowling, in which he claimed 2-14, swung the momentum in favour of KKR before Chennai skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (28 balls from 21 balls) set up the match nicely, taking 18 runs from the penultimate over bowled by Marchant de Lange.
Nine runs were required from the last over but with Dhoni being dismissed when he was bowled by a slower ball from Bhatia in the second ball, the match went down to the wire.
Aiming to send the ball out of the park, Bravo miscued one delivery in the penultimate ball when his bat slipped out of his hands on to the midwicket to take the match to a last ball finish.
With the win on Monday, Chennai climbed to fourth spot in the table with 17 points from 15 matches, the same as KKR who occupied the third spot with a better net run rate.
The win also avenged Chennai’s first-leg defeat at home against the same opponents.
Chennai were given an aggressive start by Hussey and Vijay who put on 97-run partnership from 62 balls. The duo seemed to begin from where they had left in the previous match when their 75-run stand had set the tone for a comprehensive nine-wicket win over table-toppers Delhi Daredevils.
Laxmipathy Balaji, having recovered from a ligament strain, looked out of sorts as the seamer was hit for 11 runs that included a six, a boundary and a wide.
Hussey was equally ruthless against Jacques Kallis for a six in the next over while Vijay too complemented the Aussie with some delightful strokes. It was raining sixes and boundaries all over the park.
The first powerplay yielded 51 runs as Chennai were comfortably placed at 96 for no loss in 10 overs.
The blazing start meant that the required run-rate was well under control while KKR struggled on the field.
Even a successful 11th over in which Narine foxed the Chennai opening duo could not make much of an impact.
A third wicket followed in the form of Suresh Raina (8) but with the equation reading 49 runs from 40 balls, it was well under control for Dhoni’s men.
But Narine’s final over in which he conceded just three runs, swung the momentum in favour of KKR with 32 required from last three overs.
Narine returned with figures of 4-0-14-2 to give KKR a fine chance but de Lange’s penultimate over in which he leaked 18 runs gave the momentum back to Chennai.
Earlier, put into bat, KKR put up yet another stupendous opening partnership when Gambhir and McCullum put on their season’s second highest 99 (behind 113 vs Pune Warriors).
The skipper once again led from front with a 43-ball 62 (6×4, 3×6), his sixth half century in 10 matches, and together with McCullum (37 from 29 balls; 4×4, 1×6) the duo decimated the Chennai attack.
At one point, it seemed that Dhoni’s ploy to field on this difficult track had backfired in their must-win match to keep their play-off hopes alive.
But another shoddy performance by KKR middle order meant that the home team was pegged back to 158 for six.
In fact, had it not been for Debabrata Das’s cameo of 19 from 10 balls with two boundaries and one six, KKR could have been in trouble to reach the 150-run mark.
From 99 for no loss in 12th over, KKR were reduced to 128 for five in the 18th over as Kallis (4), Manoj Tiwary (12) and Yusuf Pathan (11) failed to capitalise on the fine start.
KKR were 86 for no loss after 10 overs but lost two wickets for 26 runs in remaining five overs for Chennai to make a stunning turnaround.
Left-arm spinner Jakati, who leaked 17 runs from his first two overs, made a successful return in his second spell with 2-9 that included the prized scalps of Kallis and Gambhir to peg back the Knight Riders.
It was a clinical start by Gambhir and McCullum who made their intention loud and clear, taking charge of Chennai pace spearhead Ben Hilfenhuas.
Gambhir pulled Hilfenhaus over square leg while McCullum came down the track to hit him over mid on in the same over to unsettle the Aussie’s rhythm.
Gambhir hit Jakati for a six and followed it up with a boundary as KKR raced to 50 for no loss in the sixth over. Jakati then dropped a sitter from McCullum in the same over when the New Zealander was on 11.
Gambhir notched his sixth fifty of the season from 31 balls that included five fours and three sixes.
McCullum also started firing at the other end, hitting Raina for a six as things started to look ominous for Chennai.
The duo bettered their previous best stand of 95 (vs Royal Challengers Bangalore) but a rare mix up in the middle and a direct hit by Dhoni yielded the visitors a much-needed breakthrough in 11.3 overs.
Smartphone users more oblivious to others: study
May 12th
Users of smartphones, such as iPhones and BlackBerrys, have a different sense of privacy and of the appropriateness of public cellphone usage compared to users of more traditional mobile devices, a study shows.
Researchers from Tel Aviv University drew these conclusion after studying the attitudes of about 150 people in Israel.
Eran Toch, from the school’s department of industrial engineering, said in statement that smartphone users tend to have an illusion of being in a “privacy bubble” when using their devices in public.
The research found that people with smartphones were 70 per cent more likely than those with less advanced cellphones to think their devices gave them a fair degree of privacy when using them in public.
Smartphone users were also 20 per cent less likely to think talking on their devices in public bothered other people, and 50 per cent less inclined to be annoyed by other people using their phones, the study found.
Toronto tech-trend analyst Alan K’necht, a partner at Digital Always Media, said such cultural tendencies found in the Israeli study also hold true in Canada.
“I see it all the time,” he said. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard conversations, thinking, ‘You shouldn’t be having that conversation at the grocery store or on the street corner.’ ”
K’necht said it’s probably not so much that certain types of cellphones transform people’s personalities, but those predisposed to react to phone calls, emails and texts right away are more attracted to smartphones. He added that a higher proportion of young people have smartphones than older people, and that could be a factor in the study’s findings.
“There’s a generation that has grown up very tech savvy and has this sense of immediacy and response, and the only way to do that is to respond immediately — take the call in meetings, respond to texts and tweets and emails on the fly.”
Another of the study’s authors, Tali Hatuka from Tel Aviv University’s geography department, suggested that public spaces be re-designed in such a way that there are designated areas for phone usage, and other areas where it’s not allowed.
K’necht said it might be worthwhile to have more phone booths in public spaces, such as restaurants, where people bring their own phones.
“If the venue wants to provide the old-fashioned phone booth where you can go and sit down in a little cubbyhole and chat, there might be a marketing opportunity,” he said.
A new road, from Ennore port to Mamallapuram
May 10th
The government on Wednesday unveiled a plan to lay a 162-km ‘Chennai Peripheral Road’ that will connect Mamallapuram with Ennore Port at an outlay of Rs. 1,420 crore.
Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said a project report would be prepared for the road that would link the tourist town of Mamallapuram, with Ennore via Singaperumalkoil, Sriperumbudur, Tiruvallur, Thamaraipakkam, Periyapalayam and Puduvayal till Kattupalli.
While new roads to a length of 83.20 km would be laid, 78.60 km of existing roads would also be upgraded under the project.
A detailed plan would be prepared for creation of bypass roads linking State highways in the city limits, to reduce traffic congestion in urban localities.
Besides, whenever a new road was laid or upgraded, a ‘road grid’ system would be formed to facilitate development around the road, the Chief Minister said, adding that the first road grids would be taken up on Outer Ring Road in Chennai as a pilot project.
Thanking the Chief Minister, Highways Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said the proposed Chennai Peripheral Road would greatly reduce congestion in the city as heavy vehicles and containers to Ennore port would not enter the city limits.
A new four-lane bridge linking Srirangam and Tiruchi across the river Coleroon would be built along with a small bridge near the approach road at a cost of Rs. 81 crore.
Similarly, Rs. 12 crore would be spent on bridges in Karur and Namakkal districts, Ms. Jayalalithaa said. Detailed reports would be prepared for circular roads in Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Salem, Tirupur, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Erode and Vellore cities, the Chief Minister added.

Delhi’s bowlers never troubled them and they looked flat. This win helps Chennai go to fourth position in the points table. It has also given a slight boost to their net run-rate.
IPL 2012 – CSK vs DD – CSK win by 9 wickets
Raina: The plan was to finish the match in the 15th over. I was told to play straight. Vijay and Hussey batted well and I am glad that we did it. Credit goes to the bowlers for setting this up. Hilfenhaus bowled really well.
Vijay: It is good to get some runs under my belt. I am happy that my contribution helped the team win. Earlier in the tournament, I was hitting the ball too hard. Now, I am focusing on my timing and I hope to do well as the tournament progresses.
DD 114/5 lost to CSK 115/1 (Hussey 38, Vijay 48 not out)
10:58 pm | 15.2 overs: And it’s all over for Delhi. Aaron to Raina, 3 runs, Chennai seal victory comprehensively, length ball outside off, Raina hammers it high over deep mid wicket but he cannot time it well, the ball lands in between the two fielders and Nagar fires a wild throw at the bowler’s end, there is no backing up and they sneak in an extra run to get a much-needed victory. CSK win by 9 wickets against table-toppers.
An interesting fact about Raina: He has not missed a single match in all editions of IPL till now
Suresh Raina, left handed bat, comes to the crease
10:31 pm | 10.1 overs: WICKET! Irfan Pathan to Michael Hussey, out Caught by Mahela Jayawardene!! Finally, Delhi get the breakthrough. Not the best ball that he has bowled but they will take it. Short and wide delivery from Irfan outside off, Hussey cuts it hard but straight to the fielder at backward point, Mahela makes no mistake. Michael Hussey c Mahela Jayawardene b Irfan Pathan 38(32) [4s-5 6s-1] (CSK 75/1 in 10.1 overs)
10:06 pm | 5 overs: CSK are 38/0 at the stage with Michael Hussey (22*) and Murali Vijay (15*) in the middle. Solid over there for Chennai. Opener Hussey hit three fours off Morne Morkel in it. A reminder here – CSK is just chasing a target of 115 – so this should be over in no time is the hosts continue to bat the way they are doing now.
9:47 pm | 0.3 overs: A couple there to Hussey to start with. Morne Morkel to Michael Hussey, 2 runs, Morne bowls this short of length ball on the pads, Hussey tucks it to fine leg and they take a couple
9:45 pm | Michael Hussey and Vijay are at the crease. Michael Hussey is on strike. Morne Morkel will open the attack
Lalit Modi (predicts) tweets: Just checked score. Looks like 2 much needed points for CSK on way. ?
CHENNAI SUPER KINGS: Target 115 in 20 overs – Easy!
DELHI DAREDEVILS: 114/5 in 20 overs (Yogesh Nagar 43 not out; Hilfenhaus 3-27)
9:28 pm | 19.6 overs: INNINGS! Dwayne Bravo to Nagar, no run, last ball off the innings is a dot ball, that sums up the Delhi innings, another slower delivery, Nagar attempts the Dilscoop and connects only thin air. Delhi manage to score 114/5 – an easy target for CSK. All this because of some superlative bowling by thier Australian recruit Ben Hilfenhaus, who finished with impresive figures of 4-0-23-3
9:04 pm | 15 overs: Delhi are 78/5 at the stage with Yogesh Nagar (21*) and Irfan Pathan (4*) in the middle. The run rate is still a poor 5.20. Looks like Delhi Daredevils have lost their daredevilry, here in Chennai
Irfan Pathan, left handed bat, comes to the crease
8:58 pm | 13.2 overs: WICKET! And the fifth one goes down…Delhi in deep trouble! Ashwin to Venugopal Rao, out Caught by Albie Morkel!! Kamaal catch from Albie at covers, it was well flighted on off, he gave too much air on that, Venugopal Rao was looking to chip it over cover, but didn’t get the desired elevation and Albie dives to his left and pulls off a terrific catch at covers. Venugopal Rao c Albie Morkel b Ashwin 27(24) [6s-2] (DD
8:47 pm | 10 overs: Delhi are 52/4 at the stage with Yogesh Nagar on 10 and Y Venugopal Rao on 16. The run rate is a poor 5.20. That is because CSK’s Aussie recruit Ben Hilfenhaus did away with the Delhi top order.
Yogesh Nagar, right handed bat, comes to the crease
8:26 pm | 5.2 overs: WICKET! Delhi are losing wickets in a jiffy. Albie Morkel to Mahela Jayawardene, out Caught by Michael Hussey!! Delhi are losing wickets in a heap, another poor shot from from their batters, it was a fullish delivery on off and slower also, Mahela Jayawardene checked his shot at the last minute and chips it tamely to Hussey at mid on, who accepts it gleefully. Mahela Jayawardene c Michael Hussey b Albie Morkel 8(10) [4s-1] (DD 24/4 in 5.2 overs)
Venugopal Rao, right handed bat, comes to the crease
8:24 pm | 4.6 overs: WICKET! Naman goes down cheaply! Hilfenhaus to Naman Ojha, out Caught by Dhoni!! Excellent take from Dhoni down the leg side, it was back of a length delivery angling down the leg side, Naman Ojha was looking to play it down to fine leg, but got a bit of glove, the ball was dying on Dhoni, but he dived to his left and takes it just inches from the ground. Naman Ojha c Dhoni b Hilfenhaus 3(11) (DD 24/3 in 4.6 overs)
Mahela Jayawardene, right handed bat, comes to the crease
8:11 pm | 2.1 overs: WICKET! Warner too fails to make an impact! Hilfenhaus to Warner, out Caught by Ashwin!! Openers are back in the hut now, Hilfenhaus takes another one, poor poor shot from Warner, it was full and just outside off, Warner was looking to hit it over Ash at mid off, but gets too much under it and spoons an easy catch for Ashwin, Chennai have struck two deadly blows quite early in the innings. Naman Ojha, right handed bat, comes to the crease
8:03 pm | 0.5 overs: WICKET! Oops Sehwag departs! Clean bowled… Hilfenhaus to Sehwag, out Bowled!! Terrific comeback from Hilfenhaus, you can’t get to see a better delivery, this one pitched on off and curved away late, he generated good pace also, Sehwag was. Sehwag b Hilfenhaus 4(2) [4s-1] (DD 5/1 in 0.5 overs)
8:00 pm | 0.1 overs: Hilfenhaus to Warner, no run, starts off with a full delivery on off, hint of some inswing, Warner drives it to covers
DELHI INNINGS - Warner and Sehwag are at the crease. Warner is on strike. Hilfenhaus will open the attack
Teams
Delhi Daredevils (Playing XI): Virender Sehwag(c), David Warner, Mahela Jayawardene, Naman Ojha(w), Venugopal Rao, Yogesh Nagar, Irfan Pathan, Roelof van der Merwe, Morne Morkel, Varun Aaron, Umesh Yadav

Sehwag: As a team we are playing really well. Now we are in the crucial stage of the tournament and we need to continue with our form. Morkel and our fast bowlers are doing their job pretty well so far. Our batting and bowling has clicked this time. Russell and Nadeem are not playing. Van der Merwe and Umesh replace them.
Dhoni: Run outs are something we want to improve on. We would like to omit them and move on. Every game is a fresh game and we need to get on with it. The biggest negative for us is our top order batsmen. They have not fired in this edition. We will bowl first, as the wicket will remain same throughout. Delhi are good chasers and we need to contain them. Only one change in our side, Jakati comes in for Yo Mahesh.
